Bruno Laboucarie's Domaine de Fontsainte yet again offers excellent value with their Corbieres, comprised largely of (once?) unfashionable Carignan, raised in (once?) unglamorous cement. Lightly-cooked mulberry and purple plum are accented with Burley tobacco, cedar, rosemary, while a saline suggestion of shrimp shell reduction helps convey mouthwatering interest in taking the next sip, and is sure to form part of this wine's attraction at table over the next several years. There is a pleasant graininess and a certain sense of thickness but none of the tannic rusticity or heaviness that are too often hallmarks of its appellation, and while I have trouble convincing myself of the "12.5% alc." that appears on the label, there is a genuine sense of levity to the finish here, not to mention an absence of heat.
