Origin: Italy - Tuscany

This famous grape of Friuli was entirely destroyed by Phylloxera in the early 1900’s. Thought to be completely lost for almost 50 years, a medical doctor with a passion for horticulture found 3 surviving plants and re-cultivated this lost variety. Today there are still only a handful of producers with vineyards of Schioppettino in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli. The wine has a spicy peppery characteristic that reminds people of the wines of the Rhone valley in France. The name Schioppettino refers to the “little gunshot” or “pop” that used to happen when removing the cork.
