Introducing: A New World of Sustainable Beer

Introducing: A New World of Sustainable Beer

October 23, 2024

You might think of beer in terms of the brewing style, ABV, even hops if you’re getting nerdy. But when’s the last time you really assessed the grain that goes into your beer? Not just whether it’s a wheat beer, a rice beer, but what kind of wheat?

Well we’re here today to talk about a really exciting beer that we’re proud to carry in our cooler, a beer that’s all about the grain!

Enter: Kernza Beer by Patagonia Provisions.

Kernza is a perennial grain, developed by the Land Institute in Kansas and pioneered by a number of farmers across the midwest in the past few years.

Nearly all grains are annual crops, which means that farmers need to till their soil every single growing season to accommodate for the new year’s crops. Kernza, however, is a perennial. It’s roots reach up to 10 feet deep in the soil (pictured here) – which helps to reduce soil degradation and enhance the soil ecosystems.
