What We’re Drinking: Schell’s Deer Brand Lager

June 26, 2025

Schell’s Deer Brand is a true Minnesota staple; a smooth, easy-drinking lager from August Schell Brewing Company, the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the country. First brewed in the early 1900s and named for the whitetail deer around New Ulm, Deer Brand is a nod to classic American beer styles. It’s light golden in color with a clean, crisp finish and just a hint of grain and hops.

There’s nothing fancy here; just a straightforward, refreshing beer that’s great for backyard hangouts, game day, or relaxing after work. Whether you grew up with it or are just discovering it, Deer Brand offers a simple, familiar taste that’s stood the test of time. It’s a local favorite for good reason: it tastes like beer, plain and simple.
