Earlier this summer, Bennett & Dylan from our spirits team traveled to Kentucky to select a very special single barrel bourbon from Willett Distillery, the oldest to ever be sold in Minnesota. Joining them was Nick from Thomas Liquors, and E & Kitz from Picnic Linden Hills. With their wits together, the meeting was dubbed as a great Minnesota get-together. Smiles were had, memories were made, and multiple platters of Willett’s egg salad sandwiches were consumed. But most importantly, two absolutely stellar single barrel whiskies were picked for bottling.
Willett Family Estate “The Great MN Get-Together” 12yr Bourbon: At 12 years of age, this barrel represents some of the oldest bourbon made at Willett Distillery since they resumed their distilling operations in 2012. The character of this bourbon wafts readily from the glass, its aromas and flavors deeply complex yet familiar: chocolate, nougat, caramel, honey, fresh leather, nutmeg, and an antique-like quality that suggests cedar and cherry wood. A true journey for the palate.

Willett Family Estate “Rye Not Call Me Bourbon” 12yr Single Barrel Rye: Not only did we get to select a Family Estate bourbon, but we got participate in the selection of Thomas Liquors’ 12-year Family Estate Rye barrel. Nick and the fam have graciously parted with a couple cases for us to sell. Like the bourbon, at 12 years old, this is some of the oldest aged stock in Willett’s inventory. Willett is known for their exemplary rye whiskeys, and this bottle does that notion justice. Aromas of honey, butterscotch, rosemary, dill and orange marmalade. The palate follows with a waxy fruitiness, waves of butterscotch and dancing spicy rye notes. A must-have for the rye aficionado.
