Sometimes I drink for one reason: nostalgia. Recently, I picked up a four pack of Off Color’s Apex Predator, which I discovered a few years ago during a trip to Chicago.
There are several things to like about this saison. From its floral and juicy aroma to the balance between the hops bitter and tropical notes. Some saisons are either too spiced or too fruity. This is neither, just a well-balanced beer that goes great with Pad Thai and a side of crispy eggrolls.
But none of those are the first things I think of when enjoying an Apex Predator. I think of my friends Max and Jake who live in Chicago, and the time we went to Off Color’s taproom, the Mousetrap. I think of sitting in that taproom, laughing and making memories with old friends. That full bodied kind of laugh that makes your sides hurt.
Is this the best beer in the France 44 beer cooler? Maybe not. Is it a great beer to share with the people in your life that make you smile? I’ll let you be the judge.
