The Champagne Whisperer

October 14, 2026

When I visited Benoit Marguet’s winery, I knew that he was particular. I also knew that he was dedicated to making wines with minimal intervention. What I didn’t understand was just how particular and how dedicated a winemaker he was. To say that his methods strictly follow Biodynamic rules is both accurate and completely insufficient. It would be fairer to say that he is a champagne whisperer.

Not figuratively. Literally.

He sings to his barrels. He requires everyone to turn off their cell phone when they enter the cellar because he doesn’t want EMF to disturb the ageing process. He makes his own custom tinctures from minerals and yeasts that he applies to his vines with a custom-built contraption he calls his “spider”.

And he does all this so that the wines evolve unlike anything else you will find in Champagne. His wines have more than personality, they have a backstory. They grow and evolve. They have happy days and quiet days. But most remarkably, they are truly unique. It is a rare opportunity to hear him discuss his creations in person. Fortunately, we have just such an alignment of stars.

If you have ever wondered what makes a wine unique, memorable, or even transformative, you will be hard pressed to find a better opportunity than an evening with Benoit Marguet guiding you through his wines.

November 9th | 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Join us for a truly unforgettable evening as we welcome renowned winemaker Benoît Marguet to our Event Space, and Minnesota, for the first time! This is a rare opportunity to meet Benoît in an intimate class setting exploring his philosophy, farming, cellar practices and extraordinary wines. Benoît’s approach to winemaking brings new meaning to the term “low intervention”: he produces special biodynamic tinctures to his vineyards using a custom-built device he lovingly refers to as “the spider,” he bans all emf-transmitting devices from his winery to prevent radio waves from disturbing the maturation of his wines, and he has even been known to serenade his barrels with Buddhist chants and tantric percussion.

The result is a collection of Champagnes that feel remarkably alive—energetic, precise, nervy and deeply expressive of place. Best of all, Benoît will be here himself to pour the wines, share his story and show you what makes his Champagne so special!

WHAT YOU’LL GET IN THIS CLASS:

  • A deep-dive, instructor-led tasting.
  • A flight of Champagne Benoît Marguet wines.
  • An individual cheese plate.
  • Special pricing on all featured wines.
  • Some lasting memories!

Rick started back in the family business just as it was about to undergo a major expansion. His first memories of the building go back to the mid-70s when his dad put him in an empty beer box and rode him up and down the conveyor belt. He worked on-and-off through his teenage years, dusting bottles, stocking shelves and bagging ice. His wine cabinet is dominated by Pinot Noirs and Piedmontese reds. If he were not working here, he would be looking for new excuses to travel to wine country.
